She had been afloat for 255 days and was probably one of the most magnificent ships ever built. During her short life she sunk the pride of the British navy, was the subject of daily statements in the House of Commons and acted as a diversion for most of Britain's naval strength. Her end marked the ruination of much of German naval strategy and led to her sister ship, Tirpitz, spending much of the war skulking in Norwegian fjords. Her story and her short life are even today a legend.

Originally published in 1980 by Bodley, Head and Grafton, this is a massively revised and expanded edition, incorporating a great deal of new information and many previously unpublished photographs. Translated by Jack Sweetman.
