by Fletcher, On 16 May 1811 an Allied army of 35,000 British redcoats, Portuguese and Spanish troops took up position around the village of Albuera in south-western Spain, astride an important road from which Napoleon’s Marshal Soult intended to push them aside. The battle that followed ended in an Allied victory, but at an appalling cost in lives, and has passed into legend as one of the bloodiest days in the history of the British Army.

Ian Fletcher, a respected authority on the Peninsular War, here recounts the whole 1811 campaign, with Albuera as its centrepiece. The text is illustrated with around 100 black and white photographs and maps, including photographs of the battlefields today, and by a striking portfolio of 16 full-colour uniform figures meticulously researched and detailed by the renowned military artist Gerry Embleton.
